1-3a: Think it Through & Think in “Ink”

This is the first of three pre-writing (or scaffolding) exercises for Essay #1 (e1 prompt) that I usually assign together (1-3a, 1-3b, & 1-3c). Please plan to do them in sequence:  1-3a →1-3b → 1-3c

This first part, 1-3a, is the most inchoate of the three.

Think: leaves swirling in the wind in late autumn.

Yeah, kinda hard to follow, but that’s the idea.

Best to ditch any writing you’ve done up until now, and start with a fresh notebook or word doc, and have at it!

For my essay, I am going to write mainly about the Obama interview in which President Obama talks about how he wants to open up trade with China. Throughout the interview he says that China is a growing economy and it has a lot of potential. In order for the U.S. to grow as a economy we must branch out to other countries for trade. This will lead to the formation of brand new jobs and a decrease in unemployment. Of course, President Obama also addressed the possible problems that could come from opening up trade in China and how the positives outweigh the negatives. By doing this it would help different nations put their differences aside and work together to better themselves. Overall, President Obama brings up many good points because he wants the world to be a better place for future generations.

The leaves flowing through the wind with the different blends from a far looks like it was meant to be. Although it just happens to be placed like that. While the breeze flows through the trees gives an at ease feeling. Without the everyday distractions throughout life you can gaze at the nature around you and it might make you lose track of time. Towards the end of the season a new will arrive with different weather occasions and demographics. While others are not losing track of time and are trying to choose what to do with their time.

For this essay I plan on writing about China and how they impact the rest of the world. After listening to “Island Fever for China” I understand how important globalization is and how China is being selfish. China wants to be the number one country in the world and it looks like they’ll do whatever it takes. That includes not helping allies and competing with other countries for more land to gain more power and resources. All of this impacts the rest of the world and will have a bigger impact in the future. The goal for the United States should be to combine with other countries and strengthen each other. Sharing resources, technology, and ideas will make the world a better place and will improve the lifestyles of all humans. In conclusion, countries all over the world should be equal or close to it and that will help everyone.

In todays every changing society we must ask ourselves how close do we really want to integrate with the world. Historically integration among different peoples has almost never worked out starting from events like the integration of catholicism in the middle east, to recent events like the formation of Israel. The article we read brushes over this ever growing issue which has most people wondering how close can we really get. Globalization while good of course could also end horribly, since it is all about integration and the article is about disintegration that will be my primary focus. We all know globalization is good, but can it go to far? Look at Crimea as the article does, Ukraine has always been ‘close’ with Russia and but as soon as Ukrainians overthrow the Russian leader, they send in forces and a war breaks out. From a outside point of view the entire situation seems very surreal of how imperialism and succession could still be happening in todays time. And this is were globalization gets interesting because it talks about the world becoming whole, but with the amount of controversy and bloodshed over that whole scenario, globalization looks less promising.

For this assignment, I have chosen to write about globalization and it’s impact on our country and the world, from the Obama Interview. Globalization plays such a key role in everyone’s daily lives. Without globalization, trade and commerce wouldn’t even exist. Throughout Obama’s term, he has focused on bringing our economy back. Obama mentions that Asia is growing quickly, and we need to “level up” with them. Our country is a big part of the global economy and we need to use what we have to our advantage. Obama believes that “once our middle class grows and everyone is participating, we can compete against anybody”.

For my essay i am thinking of writing about the radio interview Island Fever for China because of the many great points that were made about the island fever that China and United States went through in the 1850s. The Chinese were building islands in the Spratly Islands in the 1850’s, trying to gain more strength in their region which is a concern for neighboring countries. The United States also had an island frenzy, claiming islands for the profit of selling the guano on the islands as a fertilizer, though it was not as bad as China’s building islands to gain power in the South China Sea. Though they were harder on China, they did make a great point in saying that the United States is throwing rocks at a glass house in response to the US’ intrusiveness in their business. The different scientists’ views were brief but very informative when they explained what was actually going on that caused these actions to occur, as well as explaining the fact that “the strong do what they will, and the weak will do what they must.”

For the assignment, I plan on writing about the impact of globalization on the U.S. In the Obama interview, it is mentioned several of times that Asia is one the fastest growing countries in the world. They have a thriving economy that continues to grow and flourish while drawing in other countries to use their goods and services. Countries such as Russia, China, and India are among the few countries with some of the smartest business leaders in the world. In order for the U.S. to grow and flourish like Asia and other countries, we must take advantage of the use of globalization. Globalization will benefit our country in tremendous ways. If the U.S. broadens their use of globalization we will see a huge decrease in the unemployment rate due to the creation of new jobs. In addition, globalization will help increase trade and benefit our nations economy.

After watching the Obama interview I have now realized how big of a worldwide issue globalization has become as President Obama continues to express his thoughts on how to tackle this situation effectively during his presentation. President Obama keeps in mind that he wants to advance by working as a whole and not as a divided nation. These global relationships are very important and with that being said China is seen as a major target when it comes to complying with other countries. These high standards the president has set are seen as an aid in order for a growing economy. He also brings up Labor Unions and the stress of jobs being lost from the previous time a situation like this has occurred and the importance to not let it happen again. I believe that with President Obama’s tactics it will lead to stable opportunities for us as a whole and a positive future of international trade.

Globalization is the main force of change in the world and is playing a role in the market system and economy of the modern world since the end of World war 2 and how it effects everyone across the world. In Crystias article the disintegration of the world explains the negative consequences of globalization and how it is harming the local economy and the middle class in the US. On the radio story of China’s island fever explains why China is building there own islands in the South China Sea and how this tread began in early 19th century and how military plays big role in China’s land grab. In the interview with president Obama he stated that globalization advances from improvements in technology and how its lowering the demands for physical labor in the US and how its important for the US to adapt to other countries so that we can play a role in global markets.

In the podcast, “Island Fever in China” the speakers compare China’s island frenzy to the United States craze for islands in the 1850’s. The speakers also denounce both of the countries for their “Island fever,” but seem to be more harsh on China. They depict China as being very aggressive, creating islands and even taking some over to help them gain power. China is using this as a cause for nationalism, saying that it is “China’s national right.” So far on these islands China has created seven military outposts, which does not look good for any country that seems to be standing in their way. The combination of the power hungry China, their strong sense of nationalism, and the new and increasing military outposts on their new islands is not looking good for surrounding countries let alone any country.

With the world becoming interdependent, in all aspects including trade, globalization seems an undeniable inevitability. However, it is how said globalization comes to fruition that is largely a matter of debate between many national and global leaders, including the President of the United States. In an interview with Kai Ryssdal (marketplace.org, 2015), President Barack Obama speaks his views regarding the world economy and the increasing discussions about achieving economic globalization. He also speaks on the understandable concerns of the population regarding jobs, and possible conflicts of another trade agreement, after the missteps taken with previous ones.

Obama starts the interview by presenting the fact that Asia, is a rapidly growing economic force in the world. Realizing that this will have very obvious effects on the United States, he states that it is crucial for America to be there and help shape how China, specifically, will handle global trade. China already “plays by different rules” when it comes to economic affairs within its own country, so in Obama’s opinion, if the country continues to operate the same way in global trade, it is America that could suffer the possible, and likely, consequences. He suggests that surrounding China with other East Asian countries that abide by the United States’ standards of trade, China will be forced to comply in order to trade with any nearby countries.

For my essay, I plan on writing about the audio source called “Island Fever for China”. In this source, the speakers make many arguments not only criticizing China, but America as well. They use the criticism of our home country to set the scene and level the playing field for China. An expert on the history of the guano islands was brought in to explain that even though out excuse for claiming these islands was that they had a rich bounty of fertilizer, their claiming was more on the level of “Manifesting Destiny”, or rather to expand our borders. On a basic level, the hypocrisy of America’s criticism of China is being put on display. China itself is claiming islands that don’t belong to it and also are making islands. These claims are similarly being taken for the sake of having more land. The base purpose of bringing this up is so that the reader will have a more open mind while listening to the critique of China. It sets the reader up to make a more informed opinion about China and its doings, rather than having a nationalized thought process and developing a “higher horse” mentality.

Summer is long gone. I walk outside and I notice that the weather is starting to get much colder, so I go back inside to get a light-weight jacket. Thanksgiving is approaching and I can’t wait to see my family. It will be nice to see how my older brothers and sister are doing. Most of all it excites me that I will soon see my friends who have gone off to college. It was sad to have to go separate ways from my very best friends. We don’t take our time together for granted anymore. We make it count! Time isn’t how it used to be. We are all approaching adulthood as we study for the next four years and we know that soon we will probably be even further apart due to the different paths our careers will take us. Yes, leaves swirling in the wind in late autumn remind me to make the most of this life and not take it for granted.

Obama’s full interview focuses on the topic of globalization, which boils down to the trust and partnership between countries. The world has proved it’s instability by only being concerned with their own countries business and their financial interest. This thought process has then led to abandoning the best interest of our world’s mass market. Our consumers and workers are highly affected by the outcome. Workers are continuing to lose their jobs each day and our consumers, such as the middle class are slowly diminishing. The middle class is slowly transforming into the lower class, as the wealthy continue to get richer.

In Obama’s full interview he proposes a solution to the world’s globalization problem. The president advocates the importance of working together. In order to create a stronger growth in manufacturing and produce, we must communicate with other foreign countries. He mentions that 1/3 of our economy is driven by exports and 90% of the world’s marketplace is outside of the U.S, which means we are heavily dependent on one another.

President Obama believes the transpacific partnership will better the economy as a whole. The transpacific partnership will strengthen labor rules, increase trade, and increase growth in jobs. It will enforce higher expectations, create safe working environments, and possibly increasing minimum wage. Several times throughout Obama’s interview he mentions Asia and how it is the fastest growing part of the world’s economy. China agreeing to the transpacific partnership would be beneficial to both America and other countries.

The glue that is holding the world together no longer sticks. So for there to be a stable economy and a growth of mass produce, we must put our differences aside and compromise. This will then ensure inequality for everyone, both workers, consumers, and business owners.

In “The Disintegration of the World” by Chrystia Freeland, globalization is spreading rapidly across the world causing the geopolitical system to break down due to the overpowering concern over the instability in the world. Countries such as Brazil, Russia, India, and China are a major part of this increase in globalization. The great fortunes within these countries have also made the world grow to be “more economically integrated” especially China with its steadily rising income. Obama says that because of Asia’s growing, the United States could be cut out and it seems that China is the most vital to the United States and in order to keep an alliance with China, business has to be conducted now.

  16. Todd Wilson

For my informative essay, I chose the relate my main idea to the recurring theme of globalization and economic change that was provided by Chrystia Freeland’s article The Disintegration of the World. “Post-war geopolitical system is breaking down” is explained go be due to the creation and expansion of large corporations and global operations. As well, large numbers of corporations are hiring political scientists and receiving advice from former diplomats, spymasters, and military leaders. The rapid spreading of globalized operation is causing such volatility that has not been seen since the Second World World which in my opinion is frightening. Our world as we see it is slowly gaining more concern of global stability that most citizens can see but not be informed of fully. Although the emerging market powerhouses in Brazil, Russia, India and China can allow future smart business leaders to earn fortunes, Freeland states that “instead of the end of history, we have history’s revenge”.

  17. Alexa

For my informative essay that I was assigned to write in class, I chose to relate the main idea of globalization and economic change to the interview that Obama was in. Obama had brought up many good ideas and points about our economy and how it functions as whole amongst other foreign countries working with us. During his presidency, Obamas main goal was to help “drag our economy out of the ditch.” In doing so, he made many trips to Asia and realized that Asia is one of the fastest growing places in the world as well as the most populous and the most dynamic. For this reasoning, Obama believed that if we don’t work with Asia, then U.S businesses and U.S workers will be cut out. Since Asia is growing so fast, has great gravitational pull and often operates with different sets of rules, the United States started the negotiation called the transpacific partnership, which helped us recognize that a big chunk of our country has been driven by exports and as Obama said, typically export industries pay higher wages. So Obama strongly believes that if we want to make sure we are selling American products throughout the next couple decades, then we have to have higher standards for protection in that part of the world where Obama believes we need to do business. If we do this, there will be more jobs and opportunities for citizens of the U.S because advanced technology which will make the labor cost for items inherently lower. It is therefore very smart to live in the U.S because there is lower energy cost, great workers, great infrastructure, and we obtain access to the largest market outside of our country, which leads to the strongest growth in manufacturing the U.S has ever had since Obamas presidency. All in all, Obama has been a great authority figure for the country we live in and has constantly made his best efforts in trying to improve our economy.

  18. Nicole Johnson

In Chrystia Freeland’s article The Disintegration of the World, Globalization is portrayed as a plague, which is slowly expanding throughout the world. In some places, it is very strong and thriving (China). Freeland points out that geopolitics play a role in businesses. There has been “an increasing number of corporations are hiring political scientists, starting their board meetings with geopolitical briefings, and seeking the advice of former diplomats, spymasters, and military leaders.” This trend is mainly due to companies trying to find more profitable institutions through “easier” methods. By doing this, countries have evolved into powerful societies. This may be good for them, but it can also end up being the downfall of many. This can lead to ill feelings between countries, which could lead to war. In the end it will truly be greed and the different ideas of “good business” that will be the final maker of today’s society.

Obama says Asia is fastest growing world economy and that if we arent there to shape their economic practices US workers and businesses are going to be cut out, discuss why they are growing so quickly and why it would cut out Americans. TPP started recognizing that 1/3 of economic recovery is from exports and that export industries pay higher wages, forcing the Asian countries to use standards will keep us in the global market because we have better labor and technology, and if they had standards they would be far more expensive to use. If we get most of the nearby Asian countries on TPP, china will have to take those business practices into account. If we make them use these standards their growth slows and businesses outsource less because their labor would be as expensive as ours. Existing rules from NAFTA disadvantage Americans so TPP will let us create new rules that raise standards and will give us more leverage. More Americans benefit from TPP than are hurt by it, though it will cause us to lose some manufacturing jobs. TPP will help us influence other countries economic practices to make our economy grow more.
