    A.
Globalization can be used as a powerful tool if employed in the correct manner. If society collaborates rather than creating conflict, then globalization can create a better tomorrow. Globalization allows trade with Japan and China, calls for collaboration between governments, and allows for the spread of ideas and technology and can do much more to better our lives.

    Iphones

    Z. Globalization can be utilized as a valuable asset to improve our everyday lives. We already trade with China and Japan, have a rising call for collaboration between governments, and spread ideas and technology across the globe. The future looks bright if we can maintain a stable environment politically. Will governments be able to utilize globalization to the worlds betterment or downfall?

    A. In the podcast, “Island Fever in China” the speakers present an issue with “Island Fever,” not only within China, but within the United States’ past.
    B. United States’ island craze in the 1840’s caused issues with other countries.
    1. Took Navassa island from Haiti, to make sure they didn’t get wealthy from it, and we still own it today.
    2. Tried to islands from Columbia, American Samoa, and Canada, which did not make them happy
    3. U.S. cannot enforce “Ocean Law” on China because the Guano Act of 1856 is still in place, and they would not listen because of it.
    C. China is being aggressive in an already problematic time.
    1. China is trying to take islands from other countries causing tensions.
    2. They are drudging up sand to create small islands or add onto current islands in the Spratly Islands, to be able to take claim over them.
    3. They are using it to lock up more power over areas like in the air above the island, and in the waters surrounding the islands.
    4. Many civilians of other nations live on these islands, and have been living there for generations, China does not have the right to take over them.
    D. China may become more dangerous by obtaining these islands.
    1. They are using these new islands to boost nationalism, claiming it is their “National right.”
    2. On these islands China has built 7 military outposts, which is making their military grow.
    3. No one is able to enforce laws to stop them, so they could potentially keep on growing and building.
    Z. As the speakers point out, “Island Fever” was not beneficial for the United States, and seems to be causing some conflict for China as well. How much longer can China go on with this, better yet, will anyone be able to stop them?

  12. Deidra

    A. Intro: Globalization is repeating history. It is continuously trending, however it can lead to an abundance of future problems. Globalization contains selfishness of countries only looking out for themselves. This also is causing a downfall within the geopolitical system where the U.S feels they have little control
    B. Trending
-an increasing # of corporations hiring political scientists…etc
    -New opportunities
-Movement of countries toward market democracy
    C. Power
-Rising incomes in emerging economies, mainly China
    -More powerful economic weapons
    -technological advances
    D. Downfall
    -Business instability
    -Economic inequality
-Western industrialization economies struggling to grow. Countries whose GDP expanding are failing to raise middle-class incomes and create enough middle class jobs
    E. Globalization is causing hardships for some countries and riches for others. Power has basically destroyed globalization and is constantly destructing. With the way globalization is going, the economy for the U.S is causing a repeat of history of economic decline

  13. Cole Holmes

A: The main focus of the radio show is to present an event (in this case China’s island fever), but to present it in such a way that both sides can be seen, that it’s relatable, to display ideas that can push China toward fixing their attitude, and to bumble the audience.
B: The speakers are using Americas past as an example
    1. Displaying hypocrisy in our own guano island fever
    2. Using it to help listeners better understand the situation
    3. Help listeners to take an open-minded approach to the following broadcast
C: Put on display that China is being overly aggressive in their actions with the claiming and making of these islands
    1. Point out that China is making military bases
    2. People from other countries live on these islands and China is building community-like buildings without expressed permission to further claim
    3. Causing tension and conflict
    D: Breaking international maritime laws
    1. Expresses that we can’t “ throw rocks at a glass house” if we do it too
    2. Brings in guest to explain laws
    3. Discusses China’s advantage
E: Discuss how China is dealing with it politically
    1. China believes that it is entitled to the islands
    2. Other countries don’t agree with China
    3. People from other countries have been living there for generations
    Z. The goal of the broadcast was to give the people an open-minded view of the situation, while also expressing the seriousness of it. The next question is, do we get involved as we have in the past, or not?

  16. Tim Owen

Globalization is not a bad thing
Globalization is helping Asian countries more than us
    Massive economic boost for China
Asian countries use of poor standards to keep ahead
Long term affects of Asian poor standards
How TPP will cause globalization to help us more
    Standards make Asia less profitable
Businesses will move back to America for its superior technology and workers
Asian countries will grow far slower giving us less competition
    Long term benefits of TPP
Asian workers and environment will be generally healthier
America will retain its seat at the top of the worlds pecking order
Decreased tensions over job loss and outsourcing
Globalization is not bad, all above things are mostly benefits

  17. Nicole Johnson

    A. While globalization is becoming a major trend, it is more of a plague than a heaven sent miracle. In due time it will end up being the world’s demise and result in wars between countries. Globalization is fueled by the greed of others (mainly businesses and power hungry governments, has become drastically trending throughout the world and is still spreading, and is a bad predicament for any involved in the process.
    B. Greed
Globalization has led to many in the right position to be able to use it to their benefits.
    – Businesses have been outsourcing their work in order to save money on labor (ex. Comcast has their technical support base in India, not in the united states)
    – Countries overpower each other for their own gain (The major powerhouses over all countries are Brazil, Russia, India, and China)
    – Businesses have been gambling their money and the jobs of many by investing into certain rights ( “there was a $1 billion loss as a result of western sanctions against Russia” Exxon has been buying up long term Russian drilling rights,, in a bet that eventually the country will return to the world economy.”)
    C. Bad
Globalization is overall a bad idea and is going to be the demise of the world.
    – Due to outsourcing, there is a shortage of jobs for many in the United States
    – Globalization can lead to ill feelings between countries due to competition (America vs. South Korea)
    – The theory that democracy will end all together due to globalization (Robert Kagan’s essay in the Journal of Democracy)
    D. Trending
Globalization has traveled all across the world, mainly due to how profitable it can be to some
    – Businesses have gone as far as to hire political scientist to help guide them on what political decisions and relationships can be for their gain (“examples of a much wider trend: an increasing number of corporations are hiring political scientists, starting their board meetings with geopolitical briefings, and seeking the advice of former diplomats, spymasters, and military leaders.”)
    – What may have only been big in one country has managed to somehow be a part of every country
    – “When the Berlin Wall collapsed, we entered a world in which two big things were happening, as viewed from the executive suites of Western companies. The first was globalization—more and more of the world’s population was joining a highly interconnected global economy largely governed by Western rules and institutions. The second trend, closely related, was the movement of more and more countries, at varying paces, toward market democracy.”
    E. For some globalization is a goldmine, it’s profitable and hard to turn down when you see so many other big countries who are dominating because of it. However, while only a few are made rich, so many others end up suffering because of it. Jobs are lost, revenue becomes tighter, economies fail, tensions rise between other countries, and worst of all, democracy will die. It is because of this that I am against globalization, however it is already too late to try and stop it. It has spread so far that there isn’t a single country that isn’t infected. This is one plague, that cannot be cured.
